Chisel plow points: specify the fit before the price

A replacement point request should tell every candidate factory the same thing. Rural Source Sourcing helps organize the buying brief, highlight unanswered fit questions and compare the scope of supplier replies.

Illustrated point measurement checklist
01

Hold the reference steady

Start with a readable part number where available, the implement identity and a dimensioned sketch. Record hole diameter, hole-center distance, thickness and the seating face. Photographs help show the shape but do not replace a drawing when dimensions decide compatibility. If the existing part is worn, label measurements that may no longer represent the original profile.

Specify quantity in pieces or sets and explain whether bolts, nuts and any retaining hardware are included. Keep material and treatment requirements on the same revision sent to each supplier.

02

Separate an alternative offer

Ask the factory to return its quoted drawing, proposed material, treatment, packing basis and exceptions. A wider point, different thickness or changed bolt pattern is an alternative, even when the supplier calls it a replacement. The buyer should review those differences before a sample or order decision.

Sample cost, transport, inspection responsibility and acceptance criteria need their own agreement. This service does not certify a part from a photograph or promise that a proposed substitute fits.

Questions that belong in the first request

A preliminary reply may use the written dimensions and reference image. Treat it as a proposed scope. Ask what the supplier still needs to verify, whether a physical sample is required and which drawing will control acceptance. A sample arrangement does not establish interchangeability across every implement.

Request MOQ for the exact part and whether mixed lines are permitted. Distinguish sample preparation, order acceptance, production readiness and transport time. Give the farm's required arrival date, then ask each factory to identify assumptions and exclusions. No published delivery interval is implied here.

A vague request versus a reviewable scope

Before clarification

“Need replacement points at a competitive price.” This leaves the implement, drawing, quantity basis and destination unresolved. A unit quotation cannot tell the buyer which costs or compatibility assumptions are missing.

After clarification

“Quote the attached reference revision; identify material and exceptions; price pieces and hardware separately; show packing, freight scope and US destination.” A budget can express the intended order range, but the factory still needs to return its own documented offer.

Use the procurement checklist and inquiry catalog to keep related plow items distinct.

Describe the point, implement, quantity and destination. Add your optional budget and supplier preference; we use those priorities to frame the inquiry, not to assign an unverified supplier grade.
